David Spade and Chris Farley Got in a Physical Fight Over Rob Lowe
David Spade and Chris Farley were constantly pretending to be at odds with one another in movies like Tommy Boy and Black Sheep, sometimes even coming to blows in fight scenes that didn’t exactly require John Wick-tier choreography.
But behind the scenes, the two Saturday Night Live cast were good friends. While the ill-tempered Farley did occasionally threaten to beat up Spade, Adam Sandler always managed to convince him that this was a no-win scenario.
But things got really bad when the guy from St. Elmo’s Fire came between them. Last year, Rob Lowe appeared on The Rich Eisen Show and verified the rumor that Spade and Farley literally fought over him during the making of Tommy Boy. “The big fight was because I came into the hotel after shooting. Spade was not shooting that day but Farley was,” Lowe explained. “And Farley and I did a sauna and a jacuzzi. And the next day, apparently, Farley was like, ‘Guess who I was in the jacuzzi with?’”
When Lowe showed up to the set the next day, the two comedians were “fighting over it. Like I was the girl.” Although Lowe noted that he also saw the pair once physically fight over a turkey sandwich.
More recently, Eisen asked Spade about this same story, and his version of events is quite different. According to Spade, he was the one who made Farley jealous with his Lowe hangout. Spade said that Farley went to bed early after filming one day because he had come down with the flu. So when Lowe showed up at the hotel, he and Spade went out for drinks but opted not to disturb Farley.
“The next day in makeup, (Farley’s) staring at me in the mirror,” Spade recalled. “He goes, ‘How’s Rob Lowe?’ I know this look, it’s not good.”
When Spade asked if Lowe was around, a petulant Farley responded, “I don’t know, you tell me, he’s your boyfriend.”
“We kinda got in a push fight,” Spade continued. “But it all ended nicely. We had a threesome.”
So was it Spade or Farley who had the one-on-one hot tub time with the former Brat Packer? Well, Spade told the exact same story while appearing alongside Lowe on The Late Late Show back in 2015.
Since Lowe didn’t correct any of Spade’s details, presumably his is the correct one and Lowe just mixed up the details over the years, presumably because his jacuzzi mates from the early ‘90s have all started to blur together in his memory.
