In a series of tweets posted earlier today, It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia star and creator Rob McElhenney finally confirmed the cross-town crossover for which comedy fans have been clamoring since 2021. “The Gang Goes To Willard R. Abbott Elementary School” is officially on – apparently, Charlie and Mac are still allowed at Philadelphia public schools after bringing a gun and a katana to one:
Right now, it's unclear whether It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia characters will be featured in an episode of Abbott Elementary, or if an episode of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia will be set at the titular Philadelphia school. Abbott Elementary Season 4 is set to premiere this October 9, and Season 17 of It's Always Sunny in Philadelphia is reportedly set to start filming this month, so either show could feasibly feature cameos from the other – or, the crossover could be an episode of each sitcom respectively.
Whatever the logistics, the result is the same – after years of fans begging for an It's Always Sunny/Abbott Elementary collab and both Brunson and McElhenney coyly hinting that such a mashup could be in the future, it's finally happening. Back when the infamous Glaswegian Willy Wonka Experience was front-page news, McElhenney added fuel to the crossover speculation fire by tweeting out, “A lot of you are saying this feels like an episode of Sunny, but to me it feels more like an @alwayssunnt @AbbotElemABC crossover episode.”
“Just say the word @robmcelhenney. I love you guys,” Brunson replied, thus setting the stage for the most important TV event in the history of the City of Brotherly Love.
God help the entire city of Philadelphia when each show's janitor matches one another's freak.
