Peanuts
Lest you think Peanuts is a wholesome product of a bygone, simpler era, that it debuted in 1950. Setting aside that this was still Jim Crow America, basic math means that kindly old Charles Schulz lived through the Great Depression and World War II. He'd seen some rough stuff. Enough background for you? Ok cool: Schulz traded the real-life Snoopy for a load of gravel.
Yeah, rough stuff. Peanuts is still pure though, right? Sure, just don't think about the Charlie Brown Christmas special didn't have a laugh track.
