Rob McElhenney and Kaitlin Olson’s Variety feature may have celebrated the pair’s “four hit TV shows,” the unlikely success of Wrexham A.F.C. and the couple’s ties to Ryan Reynolds, but fans found themselves distracted by another element of the piece: the not-so-familiar faces smiling back at them from the page.

Since hitting the internet last Wednesday, the photos of It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia’s resident power couple quickly went viral on social media, leaving viewers questioning whether Photoshop, cosmetic surgery or the glow of newfound Hollywood appreciation led the couple from Philly to the uncanny valley.

“I love Kaitlin so much but she genuinely looks like an entirely different person,” one fan captioned a couple of photos from the piece.

Though Olson’s appearance may have left the poster “wondering if Rob got a new wife,” as they put it in a subsequent tweet, the High Potential lead wasn’t the only one facing the internet’s scrutiny.

“Kinda nuts that two of the more relatable wacky normal-person comedy actors just randomly decided to develop his-n-hers plastic surgery addictions together at like age 46,” read another viral post, as a different fan lamented that they “truly didn’t know who (they were) looking at” in the photos.

One poster, however, had a different theory about the couple’s changing aesthetics, arguing that it may be an Easter egg for It’s Always Sunny’s 17th season. “I’m hoping it’s a very elaborate Always Sunny bit,” they joked

Purposefully altered appearances or no purposefully altered appearances, McElhenney and Olson’s on-screen pal Dennis Reynolds said it best: Whether we like it or not, in the TV industry, “this is what peak performance looks like.”
