Spanish Speakers Sound Off on Peggy Hill’s Funniest Language Mistakes in ‘King of the Hill’

Peggy Hill may have been named Tom Landry Middle School’s “Substitute Teacher of the Year” three times in a row, but Arlen’s resident Spanish instructor still has a lot to learn. Namely, the basics of “Ehs-pah-nohl,” as she’d probably say it.

After years of butchering the Spanish language throughout King of the Hill’s 13-season run, Peggy is finally getting something close to the recognition she’s “always given herself,” to take a few poorly strung together words from her book. Several fluent Spanish speakers/fans flocked to Reddit on Monday to honor Peggy’s funniest language mistakes, sharing their favorite “vocabulario” mishaps from the woman who somehow managed to mispronounce words like “guacamole,” “Mexico” and even “hola.”

While some cited Peggy’s “famous arroz con chicken” recipe, her decision to introduce herself as "Señorita Margarita Hill" to a classroom full of children and incorrectly onishing her husband for saying “good Gods” when he actually said “buenos días,” many others pointed to Peggy’s most infamous Spanish struggle: accidentally kidnapping a young Mexican girl who she assumed to be a student of hers.

Fortunately for Peggy, her damning incompetence somehow managed to save the day, leading to a now-legendary monologue where she assures the “very reasonable horse” of a judge that she was innocent of any wrongdoing. “I have too many good anuses ahead of me to spend my life in a cigar factory,” she pleaded, an argument that not only swayed the judge, but also managed to move many Spanish-speaking fans of the sitcom.

“Her entire argument is a whirlwind of the most notorious false friends/commonly confused words for beginner Spanish speakers,” one Redditor wrote. “If there’s a way to more clearly illustrate her exact level of ‘fluency,’ I don’t know what it is.”

We can only hope that Peggy has had time to brush up on her Spanish skills ahead of the series’ revival, but if not, we’re sure it’ll be okay. After all, she’ll always have Boggle.
