LabKitty 9y ago You have two carotid arteries (one on each side) to supply blood to your head. Sounds like a good plan to have a backup in case something happens to one of them, right? Unfortunately, before blood gets to the brain it bottlenecks into a structure called the Circle of Willis. If the CofW bursts (something that happens often enough to haven been given a name: A Circle of Willis aneurysm) it cuts off all the blood to your brain. You'll be dead before your knees buckle.

Edit: this is also why it's important if you get into some kind of accident or collision to get checked out. As far as I know there's not really a lot of outward signs of internal decapitation. If you've got it and you move the wrong way or sneeze hard enough then it could kill you.
